Corby Town FC’s facilities undergo £35,000 transformation

Corby Town FC’s Steelmen and women will benefit from more energy efficient, spacious changing facilities thanks to Premier League funding towards improvements totalling £35,000 at the Steel Park ground.

Home to more than 40 teams from the men’s and women’s senior teams to under 7’s and over 70’s walking footballers, Steel Park’s former disused bar and store area has been transformed into improved changing facilities for the first team. Featuring the latest technology to assist with team preparation, other improvements include an area for fitness equipment, an electronic whiteboard and a large screen TV.

Desborough-based RK Electrical Mechanical Services, an award-winning electrical, plumbing and heating business, helped to transform the old sponsors bar area following its demolition.

Richard Panter, Head of Sales and New Business at RK Electrical Mechanical Services said: “RK’s team were delighted to be asked to work on this exciting refurbishment project. Our team were brought in to replace old for new, installing the latest energy efficient measures as well as taking care of plumbing works, carpentry, decoration and flooring.

“In times when energy costs are high, where possible our team advised and installed some of the latest affordable energy saving measures including the installation of the latest anti-stick push button showers, which reduce water wastage as they are less likely to stick resulting in a continual run of water.”

The new changing room replaces a smaller, irregular shaped one. Costs for the significant £35,000 improvement, which took two months to complete, were met by the Premier League Stadium Fund, which provided 70 per cent of the funding. The club funded the remaining amount.

Steven Noble, Chairman of Corby Town FC added: “The new changing facilities have been finished in good time for our much-anticipated local derby, and what we hope will be a promotion push this season, against Harborough Town FC on December 3rd.

“The stage has been set and we look forward to using our new facilities for many seasons to come.”To find our more, contact Kye Bishop 01536 601900 or email: kye@rkelec.co.uk. Sign up to the RK Electrical Mechanical services monthly e-newsletter here.

RK Electrical Mechanical Services is supporting Gas Safety Week 2021

A Northamptonshire electrical, plumbing and heating business has pledged its support for Gas Safety Week (13 – 19 September 2021) by running a series of articles and factsheets on their website to raise awareness about the importance of gas safety.

To mark the 11th year of Gas Safety Week, RK Electrical Mechanical Services is joining organisations from across the UK to raise awareness of the dangers of poorly maintained gas appliances, which can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning

The Desborough-based company will be addressing a whole range of gas safety matters for gas users by issuing advice about how to stay gas safe on their website and on social media.

Fraser Keir, Mechanical Contracts Manager at RK, said: “This year, Gas Safety Week is addressing a whole range of gas safety matters for gas users across the country - from advice about how to stay gas safe, to raising awareness of using a registered engineer who is legally qualified, to ensure consumers don’t suffer from the effects of illegal gas work through lack of awareness.

“As a company we take matters of health and safety very seriously for our staff and customers and we are delighted to do anything we can to highlight the importance of gas safety.”

Jonathan Samuel, Chief Executive for Gas Safe Register, said:It’s great to see so many people supporting Gas Safety Week this year to help share important and, in some cases, lifesaving advice about gas safety. The last year or so has taught us the vital importance of helping and supporting those in our communities. Ensuring people always use a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer to work on gas appliances in their homes is a great way to show how we can work together to stay gas safe.’’

To keep you and your family safe, follow Gas Safe Register’s top tips:

  • Know the symptoms of CO poisoning; headaches, nausea, breathlessness, collapse, dizziness and loss of consciousness.

  • If you smell gas or think there might be a gas leak, call the free 24-hour national gas emergency number immediately on 0800 111 999.

  • Never attempt to work on a gas appliance yourself, always seek the help of a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer who can work on your gas cooker, boiler or fire in a safe way.

  • Don’t cut corners - only employ a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer when having gas work carried out in your home.

  • Always ask to see your engineer’s Gas Safe ID card. Make sure you check the back of the card, which will state which gas appliances they are qualified to work on.

Gas Safe Register is the official register for legally qualified engineers. You can find a registered engineer in your area by visiting the Gas Safe Register website at GasSafeRegister.co.uk

Gas Safe Register is the registration body appointed by the Health and Safety Executive to manage the register of qualified gas engineers in the UK, Isle of Man and Guernsey. It is a legal requirement for anyone carrying out domestic and commercial gas work to be registered and comply with the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998. The register of more than 130,000 gas engineers held by Gas Safe Register aims to protect people from unsafe gas work. Gas Safe Register assesses the competence of engineers by inspecting the gas work they have carried out to make sure they are safe to work on gas.  Gas Safe Register is focused on gas safety and campaigns to raise awareness of gas safety risks associated with using illegal gas workers.

Gas Safe Register deals with all aspects of the downstream gas industry covered by the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. It covers both piped natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Gas Safe Register replaced the CORGI gas registration scheme in Great Britain and Isle of Man on 1 April 2009.

INDUSTRY NEWS

As the UK prepares for a summer of staycations, Brits are spending thousands on updating their outdoor space, but many could be putting lives at risk by tackling dangerous DIY electrical work to create an insta-worthy garden full of fancy new features.

Garden pubs, hot tubs and feature lighting are top of the garden improvement list this summer according to new research* by NICEIC, the UK’s leading name for registered electrical contractors. Worryingly though, 34% of 18-24 year olds believe installing electrics outside is safer than indoors and would attempt the work themselves rather than bringing in a registered electrical contractor.

On average, Brits are planning on spending an average of £1,000 on updating their garden, as 68% of people surveyed said their outdoor space was important for entertaining this year. Despite the dangers of dabbling in electrics, 1 in 10 adults are likely to carry out the work themselves instead of hiring a registered electrical contractor, putting them and their families in danger.

In spite of restrictions beginning to ease, homeowners are still planning on hosting parties outside and plan to make the most of the British summer. The top five garden installations are:

  • Outdoor lighting (51%)

  • Summer house (34%)

  • Hot tub (22%)

  • Garden office (20%)

  • Outdoor pub/bar (17%)

Paul Collins, NICEIC’s Technical Services Manager, comments: “As a nation that has spent the best part of 15 months at home, we’ve come to see the value in upgrading our properties, and the garden is no exception. However, our advice to any ambitious gardener or homeowner is not to get carried away and attempt to dabble in potentially dangerous and unsafe electrical work without the right skills and knowledge to install it properly and safely.

“Stark statistics from ROSPA** highlight that around 300,000 people in the UK are hurt in their gardens each year seriously enough to go to hospital. According to charity Electric Safety First, 1 in 10 Brits have also suffered an electric shock or accident using electrical equipment and appliances outside.

“We all want to create that party garden and enjoy spending time with our family and friends with a newly installed bar or feature lighting, but it’s important to consider the hazardous elements such as adverse weather and wet products like hot tubs and sprinklers which can be one of the biggest risks when it comes to electrical safety if not installed correctly.

“Not only do these ‘wet products’ need to be placed away from electrical equipment, but any cabling must be suitable for outside installation. In addition, outside sockets must be RCD (residual current device) protected for safety, which works by switching off the flow of electricity when a cable or flex is cut or damaged.

“We know it may be tempting to have a go at installing a new feature, but it is simply not a risk worth taking and homeowners would be best placed to call on the services of a, registered electrical contractor such as those registered with the NICEIC – and, in turn, keep their homes and families safe this summer.”

The professional team at RK are happy to discuss all of your outdoor electrical requirements to help transform your outdoor space into a safe haven to enjoy with family and friends this summer.

New Electrical Safety Regulations April 2021

OJ : RK Social Media ARTWORK _ second quarter TWITTER2.jpg

From 1st April 2021 new electrical safety regulations will apply to every privately rented property in England.

So how does it affect you?

It is a landlord’s responsibility to ensure their property meets required standards and is properly certified. This applies to gas safety, fire safety and electrical safety and minimum requirements must be met. If the property is not adequately documented, then there is the potential for penalisation and financial repercussions.

As part of the government’s drive to improve standards across the private rented sector, new electrical safety regulations require all fixed electrical installations and electrical wiring to be signed off by a qualified electrician. This includes sockets, wiring, fuse box and any other fixed electrical parts.

The rollout of new electrical safety regulations

Last summer landlords who took on new tenants in England on or after 1st July 2020 needed to have all electrical installations inspected and tested by a qualified person before the start of the tenancy and every five years after this, unless the safety report requires checks to be carried out more often.

From the 1st April these rules have been rolled out to apply to  landlords with existing tenancies. The rules apply to all private tenancies in England, including houses in multiple occupation.

What are the new standards?

Landlords must arrange for a qualified person to test all electrical fixtures and fittings in rental properties. Landlords must obtain a written report of the findings and supply a copy to tenants.

For new tenancies, landlords should have this completed before a property is occupied. For existing tenancies, landlords must supply a copy of the findings within 28 days of the inspection or sooner if specified in the report.

It is a landlord’s responsibility to hire a qualified person to carry out any remedial work in order to fix any faults identified in the report as soon as possible and within 28 days of the inspection or sooner if deemed necessary.

Once all electrical fittings and fixtures are compliant, landlords should receive written confirmation that the remedial work has been completed. This must be supplied to the tenants and the local housing authority, along with a copy of the report.

Failure to comply with these electrical safety regulations by 1 April can result in the local authority stepping in to carry out remedial works. The council has the power to issue a fine up to £30,000 for landlords who refuse to comply.

So, whether you’re an experienced property investor or a small or first time landlords, the rules apply to everyone. And it’s important that landlords continue to keep ahead of updated regulations.

In recent years, there has been numerous legislative changes for landlords. Increased regulation is not always popular, but it means there is more accountability in the sector. And the new electrical safety standards will also further improve the standards of the PRS.

Former paratrooper encourages others to take the apprenticeship plunge

Apprentice electrian Michael Parr.jpeg

Ex Paratrooper Michael Parr.png

National Apprenticeship Week 2021 (Feb 8 -14)

RK apprentice Michael Parr, a former paratrooper who was forced to quit the army due to health reasons, says becoming an apprentice electrician was the best thing he could have done to turn his life around.

Michael Parr, 28, of Great Glen, Leicestershire was discharged from the 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment after suffering hearing loss in one ear as a result of firing heavy weapons.

Since becoming an apprentice at RK Electrical Mechanical Services in Northamptonshire he has his feet firmly on the ground and hopes to encourage others to consider apprenticeships when faced with having to make a career change.

Speaking of his experience during National Apprenticeship Week (8-14 February), Michael said: “On leaving school I went on to study farming, I’d worked on a farm since I was 13 and knew this was something I wanted to do. I studied farm management and worked in the industry for eight years.”

After spending two years working on farms in Australia Michael decided the time was right to follow a life-long ambition to join the army and in 2014 he took the plunge.

He said: “I went overseas quite a lot on training exercises, completing various parachute jumps. I loved everything about it and was devastated when after just four years I was discharged for becoming deaf in one ear from firing heavy weapons.

“I didn’t really know what to do, a career in the army was my life ambition. I didn’t have a back-up plan and I needed one fast.”

Michael decided to retrain to become an electrical engineer.

He said: “I decided to throw myself into a new career. I had excelled in the army and I knew I would excel as an electrician. I could transfer all the skills I had learnt in the army into relearning a trade. I asked around and was told about RK Electrical Mechanical Services.”

The award-winning Desborough-based employer specialises in providing high-quality electrical, plumbing and heating services over a number of industry sectors, including housing developments, social housing sites and industrial, commercial and domestic properties.

Apprenticeships in electrical plumbing and heating, including gas, are offered to successful candidates on completion of a two-week trial.

Michael will complete his second year in March.

He added: “Being an apprentice is so much better than I expected it to be. I’ve had fantastic support from everyone at the firm and I would tell anyone faced with a situation like mine to go with their gut feeling, don’t let the word ‘apprentice’ put you off.

“As much as I wanted to stay in the army I knew that becoming an electrician would be better for my future and the time goes so fast. When I was told I was getting discharged from the army I really didn’t think I’d be where I am now.

“I knew a bit about electrics and decided to go for it and I would encourage others to do the same.”

RK Electrical Mechanical Services is currently supporting seven apprentices across both the electrical and mechanical sides of the industry.

Kye Bishop, Business Development Manager, added: “Apprenticeships have a key role in helping the UK’s economic recovery from COVID-19 and we are proud to be able to help people like Michael to retrain and up-skill. Our apprenticeship scheme supports our commitment to organically grow the business and create our own professional, highly-skilled workforce.”

On completion of the apprenticeship programme candidates will have taken the necessary steps to be qualified as either an electrical or mechanical engineer.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the RK Electrical Mechanical Services apprenticeship scheme can contact Kye Bishop 01536 601900, email: kye@rkelec.co.uk or sign up to a monthly e-newsletter click below.

Keeping on top of health and safety is something we take very seriously at RK. Well done to our team of electrical and mechanical engineers who successfully completed PASMA training recently.

Founded in 1974, the Prefabricated Access Suppliers’ and Manufacturers’ Association (PASMA), is the recognised focus and authority for mobile access towers.

On completion our engineers are now equipped with a better understanding of the legislation required in order to erect, dismantle and inspect mobile access towers.

Special thanks to Universal Training Services in Corby who delivered the course exclusively for our members in a COVID-secure environment.

All engineers were required to check in via an app and complete a temperature check on arrival. Socially-distanced theory lessons were delivered successfully and all engineers donned masks, gloves, hats, boots and high-visibility vests.

Kye Bishop, RK Business Development Manager, said: “Ensuring a safe working environment is of paramount importance to us at RK and this continues to be our priority throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

“Thanks to the guys at Universal Training Services in Corby who delivered an exclusive course for our staff in a safe and secure environment allowing us to satisfy our commitment to expand the number of staff to hold this qualification.”

The engineers join RK Contracts Manager, Bradley Grimes, as the latest members of staff to complete training recently. Bradley successfully tackled all things safety and completed a Site Management Safety Training Scheme.

The course covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessments in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures and adequate communication to sustain a strong Health and Safety culture among the workforce.

Well done and congratulations to all!
